The house is believed to have been constructed for Charles Metcalfe prior to 1912 together with neighbouring 72 and 78 Alexandra Street. Sands Directory: 1914 Joseph Bradley (conductor of Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Society) rents ‘Dunmore’. The property was acquired in 1918 by James Spence, retired police superintendent who resided in the house from about 1920. Queen Anne Revival Federation house of picturesque asymmetrical double-fronted design featuring a ‘candle-snuffer’ roof to octagonal corner verandah tower. Roughcast/face brick Queen Anne chimneys. Marseilles tile roof and ridges, finials. Projecting gable, purlin brackets, shingled bell-cast gable piece and square bay with triple-sash set and toplights in leadlight sashes. Timber fretted brackets and turned posts to verandah. Walls painted – originally tuckpointed. The houses (72,76,78) form a group of like buildings which demonstrate high-quality speculative property development on the peninsula in the early decades of the 20th century.
