William F. Batiste was a ferry captain; he retired at the age of fifty-two to build this stone house in 1884 on £2 per week. He later became a master carrier and fuel merchant and in 1916 Mrs Elizabeth Batiste was listed in Sands Directory as ‘carrier’.
