In 1869 the land on which this house stands was owned by Henry Brown, ironmonger (see 11A Ady Street). It was sold to John Metcalfe in 1897. From 1904-1916 Orewa was a hospital or nursing home. In 1919 Mr Purves sold it to Professor Frederick Eastaugh and his family lived here for 34 years. House nos. 72, 76 and 78 are said to have been built at the same time by the same builder as all have the appearance of Federation style cottages.
